Disco 5 out in the open

According to its builders, the new Discovery will be just as capable as its rugged predecessors

LAND ROVER has released images and technical specs for the Discovery 5, which is set to make its global debut in 2017.

The next Disco reflects in no uncertain terms where the the brand is heading – Poshville.
Gone is the overall boxy shape.

The new shapely Discovery shares basic styling cues with the likes of the Evoque, Discovery Sport and even the Range Rover.

The only clue that this fancy SUV stems from the Discovery line is the customary step in the roof, but even that has been toned down.

High tech features

Land Rover has pulled out all the stops when it comes to gadgets.

The list is truly extensive and sets new benchmarks;
Nine USB ports for the Disco’s seven occupants, six 12V sockets and an in-car 3G WiFi hotspot for up to eight devices.

It also contains ‘Intelligent Seat Fold’ technology that allows the two rear rows of seats to be folded flat in 14 seconds via a smartphone app, or by using the main touchscreen.

It allows owners to set the seating arrangements before they get to the vehicle, for instance while queuing with their shopping.

The app also lets owners check the fuel level, confirm the windows are closed, locate the car on a map and remotely operate the air-con.

There is also an ‘Activity Key’ wristband for owners who practice water sports.

All-terrain capability

According to its builders, the new Discovery will be just as capable as its rugged predecessors.

The latest multi-mode Terrain Response 2 system offers a range of settings, from throttle sensitivity to gear-change characteristics, to suit the driving conditions at the turn of a rotary controller.

The driver can also set the vehicle to autonomously maintain a suitable crawl speed while he or she concentrates on steering.

Ground clearance is given as 283mm (up 43mm) and wading depth is 900mm (an increase of 200mm).

Engines carried over

While the new Discovery’s outer shell and interior have been completely redesigned, the brand feels the existing engine rage is still good enough.

The engine range is carried over from the old Discovery in the form of a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel with outputs of 190kW and 600Nm, and a 3.0-litre super-charged petrol wielding 250kW and 450Nm.

Both are paired with an eight-speed auto gearbox.
