THE uMfolozi Municipality held an awards ceremony for the most hygienic and tidy schools within the municipality, at Meet Mekaar Resort on Thursday.
According to the municipality, in order for the communities to have clean neighbourhoods, the habit of keeping their environments hygienic must begin at a school level.
As an attempt to inculcate the habit of self-love, having clean and tidy surroundings and consequently having hygienic environments, the municipality decided to teach and educate school children about keeping their school premises clean.
To achieve this, the municipality introduced a clean schools competition, whereby 30 schools within the municipality were targeted and visited during Arbor Day week, and inspected to ascertain their hygiene levels.
Of the 30 schools 22 were chosen as winners, and were awarded certificates and trophies, agricultural implements and wheelbarrows.
Two jojo tanks were presented to the top two winners.
Gamede hates filth
Addressing the attendees, uMfolozi Municipal Manager Khulumokwakhe Gamede condemned what he called the untidy nature of some people, who fail to keep their surroundings clean, therefore failing to teach their children about the importance of having clean environments.
‘We must teach our children about the importance of beautifying our surroundings.
‘Our children need to be taught about the importance of cleanliness coupled with tidiness.
‘Therefore in order for our communities to achieve this, we need to encourage our people to know about the beauty of having shared environments, for good relationships between the people and the environments they live in,’ he added.
Gamede concluded by saying his municipality is embarking on an environment rehabilitation programme through planting trees, constructing new pavements and streets to enhance the beauty of uMfolozi Municipality.
He also said they are going to engage Amakhosi to discuss the possibility of implementing a by-law, which will criminalize practices such as urinating in public.
He assured the gathering his municipality is also engaged in talks with RBM to assist with funding to buy skips, which will be made available to all wards, so people can dispose of their refuse in a tidy manner.
