Proverb joins industrial zone on school visits
‘No one cares where you are from or if you have been previously disadvantaged'
IN support of non-profit Imbumba Foundation, the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) and Idols presenter Tebogo Thekisho, better known as Proverb, visited local schools to inspire young Zululanders to set themselves up for future success.
The team visited Birdswood High School in Richards Bay and Mbusowabathethwa High School in KwaMbonambi where Proverb offered some words of advice.
‘No one cares where you are from or if you have been previously disadvantaged,’ he said.
‘Those act as barriers for your own achievements.’
Originally from a small town in Kimberly, Proverb pointed out that humble beginnings do not determine the outcome.
‘You need to empower yourself as a young person to become an asset. Master your trade, but also keep enriching yourself.
‘Ask yourself what you want, what will you do to get it and what are you waiting for.’
RBIDZ brand and marketing manager Zodwa Zikalala advised the learners to seek information about career opportunities and new developments, with reference to some of the scarce skills opportunities RBIDZ and government now have to offer young people.
‘Pursue your dream with a clear vision and take calculated risks as a young person.
‘You are the keeper of your own destiny, so expand your horizon to achieve great goals.’
The event was held in support of the Imbumba Foundation’s Caring4Girls programme, which raises funds for the distribution of sanitary towels.
‘It is estimated more than 3.7 million young women in South Africa miss up to 50 days of school per year owing to menstrual challenges,’ said foundation founder, Richard Mabaso.
‘Not only do they lack female products, but also adequate support and guidance when going through puberty.’
The RBIDZ assisted the foundation with donations and handing out sanitary towels at the schools visited.
Each female learner also received a menstrual hygiene booklet, correctly advising them on the puberty and adolescent phase, and debunking menstrual-related myths.
