Coastline crumble continues
Metres of dune face were lost as the agitated ocean claimed back tons of sand
POWERFUL seas driven by strong winds over the past week pounded the brittle coastal dune barrier north of Alkantstrand.
As far as the eye can see, the beaches are strewn with debris including huge chunks of cliff face, casuarinas, palm trees and a myriad of branches, sticks and rocks.
Once again, metres of dune face were lost as the agitated ocean claimed back tons of sand.
On the positive side, the geobag defensive wall at Alkantstrand’s blue flag beach proved its worth, and surely prevented serious damage to amenities and infrastructure.
However, one of the 2.8ton geobags at the base of the barricade was shifted by the force of the tidal storm surges and engineers are already working on plans to repair and fortify the barrier.
Dredging over the past months, with sand spoil spread across the area, also added positively to the ability of the main beach to withstand nature’s onslaught.
KZN Sharks Board team officials were able on Saturday to restore the shark nets that had been lifted by heavy seas and bathing is once more being permitted at Alkantstrand.
