Public turn our beaches into pigsties

Bags and bags of rubbish were collected

SOME of us braved the cold weather on Saturday morning to support the Ezemvelo KZN coastal clean-up initiative.

I am totally disgusted with the behavior of some members of the public who visit our beach areas and leave their litter and rubbish behind.

Bags and bags of rubbish were collected.

We only focused on the Pelican Island area, so I can only imagine what the extent of the problem is all over the other coastal areas in our city.

We are doing our best to promote the City of uMhlathuze as a tourism destination – but the sorry state of our beach facilities is a crying shame.

We can also not put all the blame on the municipality, because the workers do their best to keep the areas clean, but are fighting a losing battle against the disgusting behavior of some members of the public.

I have noticed though that the number of refuse bins provided by the municipality are totally inadequate.

There is only one small refuse bin for the entire Pelican Island area where we cleaned-up.

I have written a letter to the relevant head of department requesting him to address the issue.

The municipality needs to provide refuse bins that can adequately handle the huge volume of rubbish.

One can only hope the public will use the bins instead of persisting with the bad behavior of throwing rubbish on the ground.

We should all aspire to leave only our footprints behind when visiting our beaches.
