Society must become proactive to stop drug abuse

I propose drug testing in schools, religious organisations, sport organisations and so on

ONE of the main reasons for the recent crime wave is drugs.

People desperate to get their next fix are breaking the law to obtain money to buy drugs.

I think we need to start being proactive.

I propose drug testing in schools, religious organisations, sport organisations and so on.

The reason for this is to help identify people who have a problem with drugs so they can be assisted.

For example, if a pupil in Grade 8 who has a problem with drugs is identified and helped, that pupil has a greater chance of finishing school and being a productive member of society rather going unnoticed and moving on to become a career criminal.

If we do not take proactive measures we may lose our brothers, sisters, spouses and children – a generation lost to addiction.

To those involved – the drug lords, the chemists, the runners, the distributors, the police members on the drug payroll and the people who turn a blind eye – what you are involved in is nothing short of murder.

The drug situation in Richards Bay is at crisis levels. Lives are being destroyed daily, homes being broken into for drug money, people being trafficked and on it goes.

There is nothing substantial being done to eradicate this problem because people are being paid to look the other way.

All we can do is hope that there is an answer to the current situation so that we can have a drug-free Zululand.
