TWENTY vehicles lining up at a ‘stop and go’ outside Vryheid were damaged by flying gravel when blue light brigade vehicles brazenly bypassed the queue on the adjacent road still under construction.
It remains unknown which political figure was being transported in the speeding convoy, but community members and police alike are displeased with recurring incidents involving the ‘blue light bullies’.
One livid motorist said the windscreen of his Chrysler sedan has to be completely replaced owing to the reckless driving of the government’s VIP protection unit.
‘The spray of gravel resulted in no less than 12 chips in my car’s front window,’ said Gert Smith.
‘They simply ignored the road works official holding a visible ‘stop sign’.
‘Their blatant disregard for peoples’ safety, their properties as well as the road rules is utterly unacceptable,’ he said.
According to Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson Debbie Ferreira, it is within the motorists’ right to open a case of malicious damage to property or reckless and negligent driving.
‘Even as members of the SAPS, police are not allowed to use their blue lights and sirens to endanger the lives or harm the properties of others on the road,’ said Ferreira.
‘If your vehicle is damaged owing to the irresponsible driving methods of another, whether it is the police or the government’s protection unit, you may open a case at the SAPS to be investigated.
‘No one is above the law or has the right to ignore the rules of the road.’
How can we sit and complain about blue light bullies when our very own Mayor NRB1 does exactly the same thing!
I thought a ruling had been passed that it is only national government officials that may use a blue light brigade and not local mayors etc.
It’s quite facinating how these guys operate,bullying other road users and also having the authority to just drive through road blocks.
