UPDATE: Elevated levels of manganese detected in water

‘Only at elevated levels and for an extended period will there be health implications.’

A PRELIMINARY investigation by utility Mhlathuze Water into the city’s water quality issues has revealed that the problem emanates from the Mhlathuze weir where elevated levels of manganese have been detected.

But the utility stated it is still busy examining the root cause of the problem.

‘Mhlathuze Water is aware of the current problems in relation to the undesirable taste of the water in our supply system since yesterday afternoon.

‘Manganese is not removed through the existing water treatment process at the Nsezi water treatment plant.

‘While the investigation is ongoing, a decision has been made to abstract raw water from the alternate source, Nsezi Lake.

‘With regards to health issues, moderate manganese levels in drinking water are not toxic, but has aesthetic implications such as taste and will stain plumbing fixtures and laundry.

‘Only at elevated levels and for an extended period will there be health implications.’

The utility could not confirm when exactly the tap water will be cleared.
