Municipality investigates water quality

‘We advise domestic users to use bottled water as an alternative in the meantime'

THE uMhlathuze Municipality is pulling out all the stops to get to the bottom of the heavily chlorinated tap water that has reportedly been the cause of numerous Richards Bay school children falling sick since yesterday.

City Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, said the matter is being investigated.

‘We are aware of the water’s bad taste and odour. Advance tests are being conducted to ensure quality.

‘We advise domestic users to use bottled water as an alternative in the meantime. We will give an update at 1pm.’

In a meeting held early this morning between officials and DA Chief Whip for uMhlathuze, Christo Botha, it was revealed a report received from local water utility Mhlathuze Water at 2am indicated the issue is not related to the eNseleni treatment plant, but most likely from the original source, Goedertrouw Dam.

‘Our municipal officials have been extremely helpful and immediately jumped into action after our meeting,’ said Botha.

‘At this stage, it seems the problem originates with Mhlathuze Water, but the municipality is the direct service provider to the public and needs to ensure good quality drinking water at all times.’
