Human trafficking team targets schools
Joint campaigns by Richards Bay SAPS, Freedom Generation SA and the Zululand Observer, have now reached an estimated 10 000 pupils from schools in the City

TEENAGE pregnancy, human trafficking and airport safety were some of the burning topics covered in a joint initiative by the Richards Bay SAPS, LifeLine Zululand, the Richards Bay Airport and Freedom Generation SA at Lizwe High School in Mandlanzini last Monday.
SAPS Communication Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira, says their joint campaigns with Freedom Generation SA and the Zululand Observer have now reached an estimated 10 000 pupils in city schools.
Senior State Advocate Dawn Coleman-Malinga, head of the KZN Human Trafficking, Harmful Traditional Practices, Pornography, Prostitution and Brothels Task Team (HHPPPB), congratulated its Richards Bay-based members on empowering various sectors of the community.
One of the task team’s main functions is to prevent human trafficking by increasing knowledge, education and awareness about topics such as muti murders, trafficking for sexual exploitation, pornography and the blesser-phenomenon.
A stiff target of 200 schools workshops has been set for the year.
This month, two radio interviews with Pastor Caroline Pitout reached an estimated 300 000 listeners.
Television station 1 KZN, earlier this year covered an human trafficking exhibition at The Boardwalk Inkwaz Shopping Mall.
Freedom Generation SA this year reached 187 000 people with its Facebook campaign ‘Shine a light-on slavery’.
Pastor Pitout in August visited the Thailand Night Life Foundation to see how one of the world’s biggest safe houses for human traffic victims operate.
Workshops and training were provided for university students, home-based caregivers, early childhood development practitioners, teachers and churches.
The national human trafficking resource line was recently launched (0800 222 777) to assist victims.
