Savides bags top cricket award
'We are all looking forward to the new season and hope to go one better by winning the league'

BATSMAN Simon Savides picked up the Cricket Player of the Year award at the uThungulu Cricket awards evening at Addison Park recently.
Savides had an impressive season, being the first uThungulu player to score a hundred in the premier league and ending third on the KZN top 10 batsmen list with an average of 41.36, after scoring 455 runs in 15 matches.
But another player who stood out this past season was spinner Chad Neuhoff, who took three five wicket hauls for uThungulu.
Last year’s uThungulu Cricket Player of the Year, Stephan Joubert, finished third on the KZN top 10 bowlers list with an average of 10.91 and a run rate of 2.69.
Joubert ended off his season with 33 wickets for 360 runs.
uThungulu team manager Brian van Aswegen was pleased with his team’s performance despite having to settle for third spot on the log. uThungulu drew on points with second placed Pinetown, but owing to their first round loss to the Pinetown squad, uThungulu had to settle on one spot below them.
‘We are all looking forward to the new season and hope to go one better by winning the league,’ said Van Aswegen.
Dolphins speedster Daryn Dupavillon has signed with uThungulu alongside Gary Park, Ashley Lowbard, Freedom Buthelezi and Daryll Hattingh for the new season.
The uThungulu Union had a great year, with numerous players and school players representing KZN rural teams during the season.
Felixton College’s Abdulla Mohammed was selected for the SA Rural U17 team and bagged the Rural Schools Player of the Year award at the KZNCU function.
This season will see all local club games being umpired, thanks to Tommy Chilcott who started the Umpires Association with the uThungulu Union.
