
GRADE 12 pupils at Betesda Independent School in Richards Bay were informed at the eleventh hour they were not registered to write their final life orientation matric examination paper last Friday.
The school’s 16 matric pupils had applied to write as independents at Richards Bay Secondary School, but were on Thursday old they were not registered to do so.
According to Betesda Independent School owner Ruby Almond, the school had submitted all the necessary documentation to the Department of Education earlier this year and were surprised to discover that pupils had not been registered.
‘We have been in contact with the department since last week and are hoping that the matter will be resolved soon.
‘Many pupils have already applied to tertiary institutions and we are appealing on their behalf for the matter to be addressed speedily. We are still waiting for feedback,’ Almond said.
Meanwhile, KZN Department of Education deputy director: media liaison Sicelo Khuzwayo confirmed that Betesda Independent School does not fall under the department as it is an independent school.
‘We hope the situation will be dealt with adequately and will not compromise the future of these these pupils.
‘As custodians of education in the province we would be worried if they were not able to write their final examinations.’
