UPDATE: Chamber of Mines calls for RBM murder probe
‘Culture of violence and intimidation’ must stop – Chamber of Mines

THE South African Chamber of Mines has called for an urgent investigation into the murder of Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) human resources general manager, Ronny Nzimande, with ‘all diligence’.
In a statement issued on Monday, the chamber said it was concerned to hear of Nzimande’s death as an employee of RBM, ‘a company that has been a longstanding member.’
Nzimande was shot in his driveway last Tuesday and died later that night in hospital, the gunmen fleeing the scene in a BMW sedan.
‘While the chamber has no first-hand knowledge of what the motive might have been, it has been reported that there has been ongoing conflict over job appointment processes in the town where RBM is a significant employer,’ read the statement, referring to residents of KwaMbonambi.
‘Furthermore, we understand that several other company executives have been threatened and intimidated.
‘Circumstances of unemployment and other economic deprivation might tend to lead to conflict over access to scarce resources such as jobs.
‘All involved need to ensure that recruitment processes are carried out fairly and are seen to be fair.
‘The culture of violence and intimidation needs to be curtailed,’ read the statement.
The statement also touches on the murders of job seeker’s committee members Thokozani and Ndodo Mabika days after violent protests early last month.
It does not mention the suspension of five senior RBM officials.
