Pupils must get priorities in order

There are always excuses

I WRITE this letter in response to the article ‘School pupils claim unfair treatment’ in the ZO of 2 September.

I am a teacher at a rural school outside Empangeni and find it ridiculous for pupils to claim they are treated unfairly.

How can pupils say it’s ‘abusive’ when they were suspended for not attending class.

The schools are governed by rules, as life is. Every action, whether it be good or bad, has consequences.

This is punishment for not coming to school. You chose not to attend school and now you don’t have to.

The school is not abusing the children’s rights to education, the pupils are doing this all by themselves.

There are always excuses.

Even the poorest of our pupils make an effort to attend school because they want to and because they know that is the only way they are going to get out of the poverty they are in.

If there is no money – speak up and assistance will be sought. If you are sick, send a message and then bring a doctor’s certificate.

The children have the wherewithal to have cellphones, but no money for school and no means of sending messages? I think not!
