Start of rhino poaching syndicate trial
Alleged rhino poaching kingpin appears in Ngwelezana Court

A SYNDICATE believed to be responsible for as much as 80 percent of the rhino horn trade in KZN will go on trial in the Ngwelezana Regional Court today (Monday).
Dumisani Gwala was arrested in a sting operation in December 2014 after crime intelligence officers from Pretoria reportedly sold rhino horns to him on a number of occasions.
The horns were supplied by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.
According to police affidavits, Gwala told an undercover policeman at the time he had buyers in Johannesburg and Mozambique and claimed to make up to R13-million per trip.
He allegedly promised to pay R115 000 for one horn, but paid the agent only R35 000 because ‘the horn had problems with holes’.
