Breaking ground with water modelling
This was done to promote improved management of groundwater resources in SA
THE University of Zululand (Unizulu), in conjunction with the National Research Foundation (NRF), funded an international workshop on groundwater modelling last week, hoping to promote improved management of groundwater resources in South Africa.
Forty-five scientists and engineers from academic and research institutions across SA and neighboring countries participated, including researcher Prof Elango Lakshmanan from Anna University in India, who is also the Vice President of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences, as keynote speaker.
‘Availability of water in South Africa is depleting, and climate change is likely to impact the available groundwater resources,’ said event organiser and hydrology professor at Unizulu, Vetrimurugan Elumalai.
‘Groundwater modelers will be able to solve the problem of water shortage in the country by using advanced computer models for managing available resources in a sustainable way.’
