Re-elected mayor hits the ground running

'It is a task I accept with a sense of honour and humility'

AT the reconstitution meeting of the KwaDukuza Local Municipal Council, Mayor Ricardo Mthembu announced the programme of action for the first 100 days in office.

Before his address, the 57-member Council had re-elected Cllr Njabulo Ricardo Mthembu as Mayor.

Cllr Govindammal (Dolly) Govender was re-elected as the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Phumlile Zulu is the new Speaker and Cllr Dumisani Ndimande was re-elected to serve as the Chief Whip.

Exco was also reduced to nine members and these are Cllrs NR Mthembu, Dolly Govender, NR Khumalo, JA Vallan, JS Phahla, TV Ntuli, MS Singh, MW Hubner and JLT Sibiya.

Cllr Lindi Nhaca was re-elected as the chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee.

Much to do
In his acceptance speech, Mayor Ricardo Mthembu thanked his party, the ANC and other councillors for giving him yet another opportunity to lead one of the country’s fastest growing municipalities.

‘It is a task I accept with a sense of honour and humility.

‘I accept this mandate in the knowledge that the abiding sense of responsibility that rests on all the councillors is a guarantee for the support I will receive from all these public representatives who have taken an Oath of Office, committing all of them to do everything in their strength to advance the interests of the people of KwaDukuza.’

Projects listed in his address include a new taxi rank in Ballito, the King Shaka Mall, the reconstruction of the KwaDukuza Museum, extension of the KwaDukuza Main Library and building of a library at Groutville.
