Narrow escape for man trapped by fire

The cause of the fire has not been ascertained, although it is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault

A MAN was fortunate to escape unharmed after his house in Weightmann Avenue, Empangeniu caught fire last week.

It is believed the fire started in the garage area and quickly spread to the adjoining sections, leaving a large portion of the house burned out.

The only occupant in the house became trapped during the blaze, but a relative managed to unlock the house for firefighters to gain entry and rescue the man in time.

The cause of the fire has not been ascertained, although it is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault.

‘If it wasn’t for the prompt response from the fire brigade, SAPS and other emergency services who were on the scene within minutes, the outcome could have ended tragically,’ Ward 23 Councillor Louis Fourie said.

Residents of the house thanked the community for the support they received following the incident.
