Amangwe still a beacon of hope

Community outreach and training focus on primary health care to patients and families

AMANGWE Village as an organisation is solvent and doing an excellent job.

That was according to auditor Mike Sneddon who presented the financial statements at Thursday’s annual general meeting.

Although a R23 486 deficit was recorded for the year, the balance sheet still shows a surplus.

In her report, Manager Erna Steynberg said Amangwe focused on five key areas of service delivery – early childhood development, home-based care, women empowerment, organic food gardening and statutory services to orphans and vulnerable children.

The Amangwe Crèche has 40 children between the ages of three and six who receive two meals and a snack per day.

In addition, Amangwe has 27 rural crèches under its wing, providing educational toys and equipment for almost 3 000 children through the toy library project.

Rural teachers are trained on relevant subjects such as trauma debriefing, art activities, child protection and the prevention and management of TB among children.

Community outreach and training focus on primary health care to patients and families.

The foster care programme is responsible for screening foster parents, the placement of children into foster care and providing supervision and support.

Social workers have supervised the placement of 63 children in 43 foster homes.

Steynberg said 90 % of children are placed with grandparents, to whom Amangwe provides parenting courses to cope with the challenges of raising children.
