Public anger over new number plates
New, standardised number plates have been on the cards for the past six years and was Gazetted in 2015

‘THEY can paint the new plates with polka dots and make them whistle Kumbaya; I will still be against it.’
That is one of the thousands of responses on social media to the latest news regarding the government’s plan to change the number plate system.
New, standardised number plates have been on the cards for the past six years and was Gazetted in 2015.
The Department of Transport gave its main reason for rolling out a single number plate format, countrywide, as a means to curb vehicle crime such as number plate cloning.
But motorist are not buying this.
Another angry motorist had this to say: ‘This is just a waste of our time and money.
New plates will not deter hijackers and thieves because traffic officers are anyway not doing their jobs.
The law abiding citizens will keep on suffering.’
The fact that the new plates will have to be renewed, like driver’s licenses, every five years, also does not go down well with car owners.
‘How much will it cost to renew your number plate? This is just another way to milk drivers,’ said another annoyed motorist.
The list of complaints and accusations are long with some even claiming that a good number of ‘millionaire tenderpreneurs’ will be created by this scheme.
Justice Project South Africa’s national chairman, Howard Dembovsky, says people should not get their knickers in a knot yet, because ‘it’s not a done deal until the fat lady promulgates it’.
