Nelson claims Big 1 title

Riders enjoyed the challenging off-road route which took participants through the farm roads surrounding Grantleigh Schools

LOCAL mountain biker Joshua Nelson pedalled his way into first spot in the 50km race of the annual Big 1 Grantleigh Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday, crossing the line in 1.44.27.

Riders enjoyed the challenging off-road route which took participants through the farm roads surrounding Grantleigh Schools.

Dirk Barnard claimed second spot in the 50km after crossing the line in 1.51.11, with John Ntuli taking third in 1.51.44.

The annual event was well attended with 348 riders taking on the 10km (171), 25km (134) and 50km (43) routes.
Rupert Searle claimed the 25km bragging rights after beating Matthew Makrinos in a sprint finish, with the riders recording times of 54.49 and 54.50 respectively.

Pieter Lamont claimed third in 54.52.

The 10km event saw Luke van Eeden taking top spot in 24.41, followed by Luke Drummond (24.46) and Troy Makrinos (24.49).
