Protesters block RBM entrance

KwaMbonambi youth picket for mining jobs

KWAMBONAMBI community members again protested at Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) on Friday, blocking the main entrance to the mineral sands mine.

The youth group has demonstrated several times this year demanding permanent employment at the company.

At 1pm on Friday, KwaMbonambi SAPS Station Commander, Colonel SS Fakazi, said there were no tyres burnt or trucks forcibly stopped as previously reported.

‘No one has been injured and no arrests have been made,’ she said.

Police remained on the scene throughout the day to monitor the situation.

But RBM expressed its disappointment with the action which interrupted their operations.

‘We will endeavour to ensure that the safety of our employees is never compromised.

‘We have assigned a task team to assess and manage the situation.

‘RBM remains of the firm belief that all our engagement with stakeholders should be guided by the appropriate existing structures.

‘Our approach is to engage openly to find a mutually beneficial and acceptable resolution to all concerns.’
