Ship-shape school sailing programme

The programme is aimed at junior and senior schools and each school nominates one teacher and six children

THE Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC) is at the forefront of programmes to establish sailing as a recognised school sport – with the greater emphasis on transformation and development.

The club has for some time being running its Learn to Sail initiative and through this some 200 children have been introduced to basic sailing skills under the experienced tutorage of Renier Greyvenstein and Antoinette Schroeder.

Given the perfect natural environment and the excellent facilities at the ZYC, and with free training and boats being made available, the sailing school has been a major success.

Not being a contact sport, it gives opportunities to the more slightly built youngsters, while the challenges of tides, current and wind give the sport a ‘chess on water’ competitive element.
