PUPILS of eSikhaleni Senkosi High last Friday engaged in a debating competition about the dangers posed by teenage pregnancy and drug abuse.
The debate, hosted by local businessman BT Gumede, aimed at motivating the pupils to be wary of the dangers of involving themselves with wrong friends and problems created by peer pressure.
Gumede, born and bred in Port Durnford, visited the school earlier this year, bringing with him a team of motivational speakers to try and inspire the pupils living in an area of high teen pregnancy numbers and rampant drug and alcohol abuse.
During the debates, some pupils touched on the effects of drugs on an individual, one even talking about personal experience which caused him to drop out of school.
The highlight of the day was when two Grade 11 girls each won a computer with a printer donated by Gumede.
To ease the burden facing many parents from underprivileged households, Gumede also donated 20 pairs of school shoes.
Thanking Gumede for the good work of motivating her pupils, Principal S Sibeko said she was grateful to him for going out of his way to make the lives of her pupils better.
‘Gumede has demonstrated his dedication and resolve to help our school improve our matric performance, and we promise to do our best in the upcoming matric examinations,’ she added.
