Young and old make moves for chess cash

FOR the first time, the uThungulu District Chess Association (UDCA) hosted a ‘Fun & Money’ tournament where winners were given cash rather than the customary medals or certificates.

Played last weekend at the Hoërskool Richardsbaai hall, 120 players took part, ranging in age from seven-year-old Kirthan Naidoo to 76-year-old Henk Keldenberg.

‘With R3 000 in total prize money up for grabs, competition was keen and concentration was the watchword,’ said UDCA Secretary Lisa Griffiths.

‘We would like to thank Dave Whittaker from Business Against Crime and Mr and Mrs Harris for their contribution towards the money prizes.’

The uThungulu Parents Committee and UDCA are hosting a banquet on Saturday, 27 August to raise funds for travel to the South African Junior Chess Championship which will be held between 16 to 19 December in Boksburg.
