Cable thieves raid substation

CITY electricians were called in to work on Women’s Day after cable thieves powered their way into a mini substation in Bronze Bar, Alton at around 1am.

After forcing open the door the criminals, clearly familiar with high voltage electricity, tripped the incoming 11kv supply before digging up the distribution cable and stripping bus bars and other gear of thousands of rands worth of copper content.

The overtime team worked into Tuesday afternoon to effect repairs and restore power to adjacent industrial premises.
