Grisly discovery in sewerage drain

The discovery was made by members of Pollution Control Services in Ngwelezane

A WEEK after saving a boy from a house fire, a city environmental clean-up team last Friday made a more gruesome discovery in Ngwelezana.

While working on a blocked a sewerage system at Phelandaba Street, members of Pollution Control Services had a shock of their lives when the body of an infant emerged.

‘We were trying to unblock the drain when I saw what looked like a human body floating inside the sewerage.

‘This discovery happened after heavy rains and we assumed it could have been an object swept away by the storm.

But when we looked closely, we realised it was a newborn boy,’ said Nkosingiphile Mamba of PCS.

The team called the Empangeni police and uMhlathuze Municipality staff who were also working in the area.

‘We had to stop work to allow police to conduct their investigation,’ said team leader Thulani Mncube.

The discovery happened a week after the team rescued a six-year-old boy from a blaze at Shayamoya Section in Ngwelezana.
