KHULA High School was the winner of the regional leg of Aqualibrium, the South African Institution of Civil Engineering’s (SAICE) school water competition hosted at the Unizulu Science Centre in Richard Bay recently.
Aimed at addressing the skills gap in civil engineering, the competition saw five local schools take on the task of designing water distribution networks to distribute three litres of water equally between three points on the grid, using two different diameter pipes and connection pieces.
They had an hour in which to design, construct and operate their network.
As part of the competition the water cycle was explained to the pupils, issues such as why we have to pay for water explained and discussing the building of dams, distribution of water and conservation.
