All systems go for ‘Grand Old Lady’
Don't be fooled into complacency though as it remains a very challenging route

BESIDES the early start at 5.30am on Saturday, which may put off a few people, the Ngoje Trail Run is ready to dish up plenty of surprises.
The main race, affectionately dubbed the ‘grand old lady’, has been shortened to 36km as the organisers have left out what they consider the boring bits.
Don’t be fooled into complacency though as it remains a very challenging route for even the most seasoned trail runner, with an expected average run time of five hours for those who can keep up a 8km per hour pace.
There are water points roughly at the 10km, 24km and the 30km marks, but hydration packs, sustenance and a mobile phone are absolutely necessary.
This year will see the introduction of GPS navigation, although the route will still be marked and navigable without a GPS.
‘Easier routes’ available
For the less adventurous, there is the 22km route which should take around three hours to complete at an average speed of 7km/hr.
This route will suit most trail runners, but there is still plenty of climbing to be done as the route follows bush lines and trail networks.
Water points are at the 10km and 17 km points.
Known as the family route, the 10km race is designed for anyone, but beware, there is a 3km climb to the 5km water table.
For the children who also want to do trail running there is the child-friendly 5km route.
The 36km ‘Grand Old Lady’ starts at 5.30am, the 22km at 6.30am, the 10km at 8am and the 5km at 8.15am, with a race briefing before each race gets underway.
The prize-giving is expected to be held at 1pm, or after the first three male and female competitors have completed the race.
