Disappointing end to Grantleigh hockey season
Grantleigh found themselves at the wrong end of the stick the entire weekend

GRANTLEIGH Schools’ first girls hockey team had a disappointing end to their 2016 season, finishing eighth at the grand finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls Hockey Challenge played over the weekend at St Mary’s DSG.
The Zululand regional champions, coached by Garth Bishop, made their second appearance at the annual tournament, claiming the same spot their previous team did back in 2011.
Grantleigh found themselves at the wrong end of the stick the entire weekend, going down 2-0 to St Mary’s DSG, 2-0 to Durban Girls’ College and 2-1 to King Edward, before drawing 0-0 with Sarel Cilliers during their pool games.
Unfortunately the team’s downward spiral continued when they went down 6-0 to Wartburg Kirchdorf School in their first play-off game and then went down 1-0 to Ballito’s Ashton International College in the seventh place play-off.
St Mary’s DSG pulled of a home tournament victory after beating Durban Girls’ College 2-0 in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw at the end of final play.
Final placings
1 St Mary’s DSG, 2 Durban Girls’ College, 3 St Anne’s College, 4 Pietermaritzburg Girls High, 5 Wartburg Kirchdorf School, 6 King Edward High School, 7 Ashton International College, 8 Grantleigh Schools, 9 Sarel Cilliers High School and 10 Amanzimtoti High School.
