New engineering head ready for challenges
uThungulu Municipality announces Babongile Buthelezi district's new engineering manager.

FROM doing gardening and domestic work at school to becoming the uThungulu District Municipality’s Senior Manager: Infrastructure and Implementation, Babongile Buthelezi has certainly proven to be a force to be reckoned with.
Buthelezi was recently welcomed on board at the district municipality to lead one of the borough’s most critical engineering sections.
But it was not an effortless climb up the professional ladder.
The daughter of a general worker and domestic helper worked from a young age to finance her high school education.
‘I did my primary education at eShowe, Kwampofu Primary School, Nsukazi Primary School, and went to Dlamvuzo High School at eSikhaleni where I completed my matric,’ said Buthelezi.
‘I was lucky to get a bursary from the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) to finance my university education, but owing to personal difficulties I had to repeat my first year at my own cost.
‘I sold sweets at the university and second-hand clothes to the surrounding informal settlements in Reservoir Hills to pay for accommodation and food that year, but at the end I passed all my first year subjects.
‘In my second year DWAF reinstated my bursary and I never looked back and went on to complete my degree.’
She is qualified with a BSc Engineering (Civil) degree from the University of Durban Westville, now known as UKZN, as well as a project management certificate from the Durban University of Technology.
Past and future projects
Prior to joining uThungulu, she worked for 14 years for Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) at the Port of Durban, climbing the ranks until attaining her last position as Programme Manager in the Port Engineering Department.
‘My last big job was my involvement in the reconstruction of the sheet piled quay walls at Maydon Wharf.’
In her new position, she will manage a long list of crucial projects, including the implementation of new water and sanitation facilities in rural communities; planning, designing and the construction of regional landfill sites and cemeteries; approve building plans for local municipalities; and overseeing the Energy Sector Plan.
‘It was a strategic career move to join the municipality. I wanted a change and face new challenges.
‘It is important to allow for growth and to test one’s experience and skills. It is also an opportunity to give back to rural communities.’
While her field of work is challenging, it allows her to think out of the box.
‘Working in a male dominated industry is not easy, but what I love about it is that it keeps me on my toes and on top of my game at all times. As the result I ended up advancing my career.
‘It is important to have an understanding of policies and conditions that govern your job profile, as it empowers you to make informed decisions.
‘A positive attitude must be the commander of your daily life to improve working relationships.
‘Never compromise what is core to your values and always remember family values.
‘Be determined and work hard.’
