Flying the Zululand flag high

Six local high school hockey players represented the U18 KZN Country Districts (KZNCD) team at the U18 girls Northern Regional Tournament held in Witbank.

WHILE the majority of Zululand pupils transform into coach potatoes, shopaholics and movie critics during the school holidays, six local high school hockey players represented the U18 KZN Country Districts (KZNCD) team at the U18 girls Northern Regional Tournament held at The Hockey Farm in Witbank between 27 and 30 June.

Danielle van Onselen, Sajana Nagessur and Chené van Wyk (Grantleigh Schools), Dominique Skinner and Carma Jacobs (Richards Bay High School) and Empangeni High Schools’ Itha Kotze flew the Zululand flag high when the team finished fourth out of ten teams.

KZNCD were placed in pool A with Eastern Gauteng, Mpumalanga, South Gauteng D and the Invitational Side, with Limpopo, Northern Blues, Northern Freestate, North West and South Gauteng C making up pool B.

KZNCD lost their opening game 3-0 to South Gauteng D, but bounced back to beat the Invitation Side 2-0, Mpumalanga 3-1 and Eastern Gauteng 2-0 and qualify for the top four play-offs.

KZNCD drew 2-2 to North West in the semi-finals and went down in the eight second penalty shoot-out.

The girls licked their wounds and took on a strong Limpopo outfit in the third/fourth play-off.

After yet another 2-2 draw, the girls headed into a penalty shoot-out, where they went down 3-2.

Southern Gauteng C won the tournament with North West taking home silver.
