Bike race for the lion hearts

The third leg of the Bell Big 5 MTB Challenge takes place this Sunday.

IF fast racing is what you enjoy, then the BuildIt Kwambo Lion MTB has what racers are looking for in a mountain bike race.

The third leg of the Bell Big 5 MTB Challenge takes place this Sunday, with the 50km riders starting at 8.30am, the 25km at 9am and the 10km riders at 9.30am.

The 25km track climbs out of the Kwambo Club before riders hit the single track sections through the eucalyptus plantations.

A landmark, which sees the less advanced riders dismount, is a culvert crossing.

After the culvert there is a short traverse into the adjoining rural areas, followed by a technical single track section where old tree stumps lie in wait before a great downhill run back to the finish at the Kwambo Club.

A water table is situated at the 13km mark.

The 50km route offers a mix of single and jeep tracks with some technical sections.

The route follows the 25km track, but at the 17km marker, riders are faced with a gruelling 2km climb to the highest point on the track.

Here they will find the first of two water tables.

The riders then have a long sweeping downhill section to get the adrenaline pumping.

After 32 km the route joins the 25km track and once again offers a mix of single and jeep tracks back down to the finish.

The second water table is on this section at the 35km mark.

Registration starts at the Kwambo Club at 6am and closes half an hour before the 50km start at 8.30am.

The Kwambo Club GPS co-ordinates are S28 35.981 E32 04.731.
