City puts engineering students to work

The selection of learners shall be a process conducted by the Public Employment Services Unit (PES) of the Department of Labour.

THE uMhlathuze Municipality will give 50 Umfolozi TVET engineering students temporary work positions to attain practical experience in their selected fields.

According to the municipality’s latest Exco agenda, the project will cost the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) R1.8-million to place the students within the borough’s Department of Infrastructure and Technical Services for on-the-job training over six months.

The selection of learners shall be a process conducted by the Public Employment Services Unit (PES) of the Department of Labour.

Selected learners must be UIF beneficiaries, having worked previously and contributed to the UIF.

The training offered to the learners shall be in accordance with the National Certificate for Building and Civil Construction.

Learners will also receive off-the-job classroom training hosted by the college for another period of six months and receive a stipend of R1 500 per month.

‘It is commendable for council to be part of such a programme… achieving its IDP (Independent Development Planning) goals, objectives and strategies,’ the Exco item stated.
