Biogas project earns enviro award for District

Two years ago the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) contributed R2-million for the construction of biogas digesters.

THE uThungulu District Municipality’s biogas renewable energy initiative in the rural area of Edakeni was recently recognised by government’s top brass.

The acknowledgment came in the form of a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Thompson, at last week’s Waste Management Officers’ (WMO) annual conference.

The biogas pilot project, a process involving the mixture of manure, food waste and water which is fermented and produces gas that can be used for cooking, was conducted in June 2013 with six biogas digesters constructed in Mthonjaneni and uMlalazi municipalities after a similar successful project was initiated in Limpopo.

Two years ago the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) contributed R2-million for the construction of biogas digesters.

Today, 70 digesters have been built for the poverty-stricken community.
