THE Department of Basic Education, in uThungulu District last week commemorated the 40th year celebration of the 16 June 1976 Soweto uprising, under the theme ‘Youth Moving South Africa.’
Addressing the staff, dressed in different school uniforms, District Director David Chonco appealed to the young and old to work hard, educate and upgrade themselves and keep the fibre thread of morals tightly together.
‘Let us live to embrace the sacrifices of those who laid their lives down for the privileges we now have.
We need to continue making education fashionable, because it is the only powerful weapon which we can use to change the world.’
Chonco also spoke strongly against the practice of what is now known as the ‘blessers and blessee’.
‘We as a society need to stand up and call for the end of this so called trend, which is a mere decay in morality,’ added Chonco, who was joined by other senior officials of the department
