City of uMhlathuze takes top honours at Municipal Excellence Awards

THE City of uMhlathuze is officially the leading municipality in the province after pipping eThekwini and uMsunduzi for the Best Performing Secondary City/Metro award at Tuesday night’s Municipal Excellence Awards in Durban.

Hosted by KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the annual event celebrates the achievements of top municipalities out of 61 across KZN.

It was double delight for City Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo, who not only scooped the prestigious accolade of the night, but also received an award for a clean audit.

‘We attribute the accolade to the hard working, skilled and capable administration team as well as Council, who play an important oversight role,’ said Mhlongo.

‘The leadership, however, will not be complacent after receiving this award. Instead, it encourages officials to work even harder to deliver services to the people.’

With its impeccable financial prudency record, the uThungulu District was again the winner of the Best Clean Audit category.

‘Through good governance and adherence to policies, the district has been able to stay ahead of the rest,’ said uThungulu District Mayor Thembeka Mchunu.

‘We are strict with our spending but also endeavour to spend our entire budget to ensure that service delivery is never compromised. I thank our Council and staff for their joint efforts to earn us this award,’ said Mchunu.

Rounding up the awards for northern KZN was the Zululand District Municipality, who was praised for having the best implemented Integrated Development Plan.
