Four escape death in Heatonville train crash

The BMW was pushed nearly 30 metres by the Transnet freight train that was carrying sugarcane

FOUR Empangeni residents are lucky to be alive after a train smashed into the BMW sedan they were travelling in this afternoon.

According to reports from the scene, the driver was travelling towards the R34 on the Heatonville road at around 3pm and attempted to ‘beat the train’ crossing the intersection.

The BMW was pushed nearly 30 metres by the Transnet freight train that was carrying sugarcane.

The driver of the car sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Life Empangeni Private Hospital for further treatment.

The crash comes a day after nearly 80 people were injured when two passenger trains collided in Merebank close to Durban.
