Careers day highlights tertiary education

The programme is aimed at improving the number of pupils qualifying to enter tertiary education, specifically in the maths and science faculties

PUPILS of the Bambisanani Community Learning Programme embarked on a voyage of discovery into the world of tertiary education during the annual careers day earlier this month.

Hosted at Grantleigh Schools, the programme is invaluable in addressing the needs of the 160 Bambisanani pupils.

Supported by Richards Bay Minerals, it is aimed at improving the number of pupils qualifying to enter tertiary education, specifically in the maths and science faculties.

The day began with an outstanding motivational and inspiring presentation by Manglin Pillay, the CEO of the Civil Engineers Institution of SA.

There were several presentations from the various tertiary bodies including uMfolozi TVET, Durban University of Technology, UKZN and Unizulu, which is easily accessible to many of these pupils who want to go into engineering and computer science fields.

Much information was given by all the tertiary institutes on bursaries, and merit funding for those who achieve certain results, which is most encouraging.

Another strong topic which was addressed in detail was the disastrous effects of Aids and/or teen pregnancy on pupils and with a simple exercise, they were shown how quickly HIV can be spread.

After an inspiring closing address by President Ntshangase, a member of the Bambisanani Board of Trustees, the pupils walked away with a much greater understanding of the world of tertiary education.
