Showtime for high five chefs
Top five contestants of the Zululand Chef of the Year Competition are sharpening their knives and culinary skills ahead of the cooking showdown

AS the countdown begins to this year’s premier trade and entertainment event, the top five contestants of the Zululand Chef of the Year Competition are sharpening their knives and culinary skills ahead of the cooking showdown on 25 June.
Hosted in conjunction with Premier Hotel The Richards, the heated competition will be a headlining event at the Zululand Trade Fair’s Saturday morning line-up.
According to organiser, Executive Chef Thys Taljaard the competition aims to give Zululand chefs the opportunity to showcase the industry and their talents.
‘Now in its second year, we promise a bigger and better show with the theme of ‘a melting pot of cultures’.
‘We want to showcase traditional food with a twist; therefore the finalists of this year have a fantastic surprise awaiting them.
‘Adding a few curve balls and twists to heat up things in the kitchen, chefs will be presented with mystery food baskets and a few surprise detours.
‘This year our host is 1KZN TV presenter, Dumi of the reality show, Siyapheka which features home made meals, from traditional to modern dishes and she will be interacting with the finalists throughout the contest.
‘We are looking forward to the community’s support and visitors can have a front row seat to all the cooking action.’
In addition, Zululand Trade Fair Organiser Debbie Smith said there will be a number of different food stalls from keeping it ‘local is lekker’ with a Shisa Nyama and traditional African cuisine, biltong and wors roll to traditional fast foods, Portuguese, Indian and Thai cuisine too.
