Culpable homicide charge opened after collision with cop car leaves one dead

A HEAD-ON collision between a police vehicle and a private car has resulted in the death of an Empangeni man.

The man, who police have not identified to the Zululand Observer, was travelling towards Ngwelezane at around 6pm on Saturday, 28 May when his maroon Ford Escourt collided with a double cab police marked Ford Ranger bakkie.

The front right of his car was decimated by the impact, and he was declared dead on scene.

The police vehicle, which was travelling away from Ngwelezane, was also severely smashed on the front right.

Police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed that the policeman was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

‘A case of culpable homicide is being investigated,’ he said.

At the same time, a pedestrian was struck by a VW Polo on Main Road just before the Grantham Highway intersection.

He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
