Vehicle thieves cornered on highway

Commotion on the N2 as local police and Alpha Security guards recover a stolen van

POLICE and Alpha Security guards recovered a stolen vehicle on Tuesday afternoon after they were tipped off that a hijacked Toyota Hilux was heading towards Durban on the N2.

The vehicle was reported missing in Richards Bay on Tuesday morning.

Security and SAP officials swooped on the suspect after setting up patrols and blocking off the road between bridge C and D on the N2 just 3km away from the Mtunzini toll plaza.

As the vehicle approached the roadblock, the driver swerved off the road, almost crashing into one of the police patrol vans.

In an attempt to escape, the suspects jumped out the van and fled into the nearby bush.

The K9 unit was called and a search of the area was done but no arrests were made.

  1. A point I think is worthy of note: How come our K9 units never seem to be able to apprehend suspects? Are they notified too late – when the trail is “cold”? Have the criminals found/devised a method to evade capture by the K9 unit? It seems all too often that no arrests are made even after the K9 unit is called in. Something is amiss.
