RESIDENTS of Nordale, Mtubatuba are questioning the municipal services they receive in exchange for their rates, as unkempt grass verges harbour snakes and rats, while non-maintained trees have led to a bat infestation.
‘The last time our grass verge was cut by the municipality was about five years ago,’ said one resident who asked to remain anonymous.
‘We have been cutting it ourselves but we’re too old to carry on. We now pay a private contractor to cut our verge, which is unfair because we’re paying for a service the municipality should provide.’
The residents are constantly sweeping up leaves blown in from nearby trees which have not been pruned in years, while the bats roosting in and eating from them cause considerable frustration and mess.
A storm water drain running the length of Heron Drive is strangled with overgrown grass and illegally dumped rubbish. As a result, it cannot channel heavy rain water which floods nearby homes and gardens.
Residents are also concerned about crime, owing to the number of non-functioning street lights.
‘It is easy for criminals to run away from police in the dark streets and hide in other areas that would be lit up if our street lights worked,’ said the resident.
The problem was made known to Mtubatuba Municipality whose spokesperson was not available to comment.
