ONE year in prison for each year he has lived is the fate of a convicted rapist, whose victim suffered the cruellest possible start to a new year.
The Empangeni Regional Court on Tuesday sentenced Sandile Zungu (28) to 28 years imprisonment for rape and two counts of robbery.
Police reported that on 1 January 2015 the Zungu raped a 40-year-old woman who was sleeping at home with her children.
Armed with a gun, he reportedly opened the door and ordered the victim to the bedroom where he raped her, and then stole two cellphones.
A rape case was opened at eSikhaleni SAPS, and the docket was transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.
This led to the incarceration of the accused on 25 April 2015.
He was charged with rape and robbery and after several court appearances he was finally sentenced to 10 years for rape and 18 years for two counts of robbery.
