IT has been four and a half years since the brutal attack and robbery on holiday makers and tenants at a guest house in Meerensee and the men responsible for the crimes will now spend the next 30 years behind bars.
On 21 November 2011 at Launder Lane Meerensee, they were attacked by the gang, assaulted, tied up and robbed of valuables.
Convicted on four charges of robbery with aggravating circumstance, Thulani Gumede and Mhlaba Nzimande, whose victims included an overseas visitor who was raped in front of her children, were sentenced in the Ngwelezane Regional Court yesterday (Tuesday) to 15 years imprisonment on each count, totalling 60 years.
The charges, counts 1 and 2; and counts 3 and 4 are to run concurrently, resulting in an effective 30 year imprisonment term.
After painstakingly working towards arrests and convictions, Richards Bay SAPS detectives, Captain SM Nkwanyana and Sgt IS Ndawonde were satisfied with the outcome of the matter as the criminals were handed their harsh sentence.
A third accused had already pleaded guilty of robbery and raping one of the victims and is currently serving a sentence.
