Junior surfers beat the waves

An inexperienced Zululand team managed to end eighth overall at the Hurley SA Junior Surfing Championships

ZULULAND managed to ride their way into eighth place despite not having a full team at the recent Hurley SA Junior Surfing Championships held in Jeffrey’s Bay.

This prestigious event is the foundation of South African Surfing with Green and Gold at stake for the winners and is held at the most famous Point Break in Jeffrey’s Bay.

The small team of 13 junior surfers aged 12 to 17 years earned the respect of their peers after their performance.

The relatively young and inexperienced Zululand team showed a tremendous amount of courage and determination right through the event, having to deal with waves about 3 metres high and winds exceeding 35 knots.

But Michaela Smith and Carmen de Villiers had standout performances, reaching the U17 girls quarter finals.

Liam de Villiers and Callum Carlson managed to reach the third round in the boys U15 division.

‘The team gathered a tremendous amount of experience which would not have been possible without the help of ZSA and the generous sponsorship from Zulchem, PG Glass and Makakatana Bay Lodge,’ said Lourens de Villiers.
