R340-million to modernise mill
Massive upgrade project to manufacture unbleached containerboard
MONDI is spending over R340-million to expand its Richards Bay plant over the next year.
The group said the project will involve upgrading the wood yard to provide the mill with the capacity to produce unbleached kraftliner (containerboard) in addition to its white-top kraftliner product.
‘These projects will modernise the operation and provide skills enhancement opportunities for our employees,’ said Mondi Group Head of Communications, Lora Rossler.
‘We expect increased efficiencies as a result of these projects and no increase in water consumption.
‘We will continue to focus on water savings initiatives at the mill and providing support for government’s drought initiatives.’
Mondi is investing R288-million on plant and machinery and R52.6-million on buildings.
The envisaged date for the commercial production of the new product is May next year.
