RESPONDING to public concerns about irrigation of the greens at the Richards Bay Country Club, Golf Captain Buks van der Walt has explained their methods for obtaining water for irrigation purposes.

‘Four dams were built as water features on the course during its design and construction in 1975,’ he says.

‘They are inhabited by crocodiles, hippos and a variety of bird life. In 2015 were were advised by officials from the Department of Water Affairs to cease pumping operations from Lake Mzingazi, and we immediately moved our pumps onto the course dams,’ he explained.

‘At the moment we only pump when it rains and our dams are full. The municipality does not supply water to our course, and future plans include the instillation of a grey water system on the premises.

‘We will switch over to grey water irrigation when we get the green light from the municipality, but for now we will continue to use only available rainwater.’
