‘Unizul gang’ arrested in Mtunzini sting

Police say the gang terrorised students and businesses, robbing them at gunpoint

A GANG of five men who terrorised University of Zululand students and businesses in Mtunzini was arrested during a sting operation conducted by Mtunzini detectives.

During their crime spree, the Unizul gang committed several armed business robberies, also entering homes, attacking students and stealing their belongings.

On Friday Philani Mbatha (25), Ben Sibiya (40), Jabulani Mbatha (31), Lindani Mabaso (32) and Sboniso Mkhwanazi (29) were arrested and charged with three counts of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The group made their second court appearance in the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where they were remanded in custody until 10 May.

‘During the arrest police recovered a .38 revolver with ammunition as well as a Toyota Corolla, suspected to have been used during the commission of these crimes,’ said Mtunzini SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Sibusiso Guma.

‘Mtunzini detectives noticed an increase in similar cases during April,’ said Guma.

‘A very similar modis operandi was reported and the detectives worked around the clock to ensure the suspects were caught.

‘These men will no doubt be linked to other cases reported in and around the Mtunzini area,’ he said.
