I READ with sadness your coverage of the dilemma facing the disabled residents at Jabulani Rehabilitation Centre.
I have fond memories of visiting this Centre as a child, with my family and on school tours.
The pride and joy on the faces of the residents as we picked through their crafts and leather goods, and passed over our pennies to clawed and clumsy hands, is something I will never forget.
These people have faced enough adversity in their lives – they should not be dealing with the prospect of homelessness or abandonment.
Surely someone, somewhere in this community can offer a solution? These are human beings.
Our politicians regularly approved spending of up to R1-million for parties and functions. How is this justified when their residents are facing abandonment due to a lack of funds and support?
Offering them low cost homes is not a solution – anyone who has cared for or loved a disabled person knows how heavily reliant they are on care and physical assistance.
I have an inkling that if your paper was running stories on the possibility of a a group of puppies or horses being left to their own devices, everyone would rally together for a moist-eyed happy ending.
Can we really, really not help a group of human beings who have nobody to turn to in this situation?
My heart breaks.
NOT HAPPY
